Time to paint some petri dishes....

Had a great day painting at Katayoun Chamanay's lab with her summer Parsons/New School students.  We worked with 2 strains of bacteria -- E. coli and Serratia marcenscens (aka "Blood of Christ"!). Here are a few resulting prints -- head below the jump to see us making these, and all the terrific comments by the students/artists. Thanks guys!

Wow, I just peeked at the plates and there are some interesting designs! The blue is super vibrant and the red is super fabulously stochastic, which means that some reds and some white and depending on the brush stroke we got some very different results!

this was one of the most informative and fun moments in my life. the idea of painting with bacteria...EW! I love it! I would have never thought something like this was possible or safe. now, I know that this is fabulous, fun and extremely creative. way to enforce the concept of Art Science even more!! sooo excited to broaden my horizons more.

Painting with the bacteria was a completely new medium, new experience. Not knowing what the painting looks like yet is intriguing and I cant wait to see what it looks like next class.

I had a great time painting with the bacteria, I admit at first i was nervous because I did not want to mix up anything and cause problems, therefore I was very careful on what I picked up and put back down. Hopefully my designs turn out good.

Wow! we look amazing! It is so interesting that these works of art are growing from a living organism! I love the interdisciplinary aspect of this experiment!

This experience was mind blowing. I would have never though that I would paint with bacteria. I am extremely excited to see what comes of the image I created.

I had a really fun time doing this experiment, and it was a nice experience. The idea of using bacteria as a medium is pretty interesting and also a tad daring. I painted with both E.Coli and Blood of Christ on different petri dishes and I can't wait to see how they look when they are done. Plus, I don't think I'll ever forget the smell of the "paint" either.
